How To Wash Your Period Underwear

Your period can be tough enough without having to worry about dealing with the aftermath. Fortunately, using period underwear makes all that easier.

If you have already made the sensible choice to opt for period underwear instead of tampons or pads, you know the value of investing in long-lasting products. If you’ve chosen Proof underwear, then you may already know that our underwear can last for up to three years without losing absorbency or quality, provided you care for them effectively.

Here, we’ll answer all your questions about keeping your period underwear clean, fresh, and just good as the day you bought it.

How To Wash Period Underwear

You can machine wash your Proof underwear in cold water on a delicate cycle. You don’t need to do any pre-wash rinsing; you can just put it in with your other clothes.

Be sure to use gentle laundry detergents as harsh chemicals and bleach can compromise the integrity of your undies.

If you would rather wash your period underwear by hand, either so you have control over what happens to them (you don’t want them getting lost and put in the dryer!) or to ensure they last for as long as possible, then go ahead. Just remember to use gentle products and allow them to dry naturally.

You should avoid using hot water when soaking or washing your period underwear. This can reduce the effectiveness of our unique Leak-Loc™ technology, which we have designed to keep you comfortable and dry all throughout the day. Once you have washed your underwear, hang them up or lay them flat to dry.

How To Hand Wash Period Underwear

If you don’t have access to a washing machine with a good cool setting and want to rinse your period underwear by hand, this will work just as well! It’s generally a good idea to wash your panties as soon after wearing them as possible, and this goes double for washing by hand, because it will make cleaning them far easier.

Here’s what you need to do:

1)    run a cool tap over your undies and add a small amount of hand soap or laundry detergent to the mix. Be sure to use gentle soap as anything containing harsh chemicals can damage your panties’ material.

2)    Gently scrub away any stains on your underwear by rubbing the fabric against itself.

3)    Rinse every couple of seconds to make sure the blood is coming off. When this is finished, and the water starts to run clear, you can rinse your undies with some more clean, cool water.

4)    When you’re done, lay them out or hang them to dry naturally.

Can period blood stain your period underwear?

If you choose dark-colored period underwear, you’re unlikely to see any stains on the fabric. If you have white or nude-colored underwear, you may see some staining on the outer layer if the blood has been allowed to dry or if it has not been washed properly.

Before you attempt any stain removal techniques, try hand washing to remove as much as you can.

Remember that your Proof underwear is made with specially designed materials to wick away moisture and reduce odor. As such, you should be gentle with your undies and avoid using anything too harsh. If you want to sanitize your underwear, use a few drops of tea tree oil or vinegar.

Underwear Cleaning Tips

Here are 7 underwear cleaning tips to help you keep your underwear looking and feeling fresh:

1)    Hand rinse your Proof panties in cold water before you wash them

2)    Use a mesh bag to keep your undies in good shape if you put them in the washing machine

3)    Lay your panties flat or hang them up to dry instead of using a dryer

4)    Do not iron your undies as heat can damage the materials

5)    Avoid using hot water, bleach, and harsh detergents. This can cause discoloration and damage your underwear in the long term

6)    Wash them soon after you’ve worn them, rather than letting them sit in the laundry basket – giving your underwear a quick rinse by hand is a great way to keep the gusset fresh

7)    Avoid light colors – unless you always know when your period is coming, there’s a good chance you can get caught out by the start or tail-end of your period, so avoid wearing normal light colored underwear around your period

How long does period underwear take to dry?

The amount of time it takes period underwear to dry generally depends on the absorbency level of your underwear. Typically, it takes anywhere from two hours to two days, depending on where you live and how you dry them. Squeeze excess water out gently by hand before hanging them up to help speed up the process.

If you want to make sure your panties dry quickly, blot your underwear with a towel, or lay them down on a separate dry towel. Roll the towel up tightly with the panties inside. Press down on it to gently remove any moisture. Unroll it and hang the panties to dry (this is often quicker than laying them flat).

What if I accidentally put my Proof period underwear in the dryer?

If you forget to separate your underwear from the rest of your washing and it gets thrown in the dryer, don’t panic. One or two trips through the dryer aren’t going to make them unusable.

However, like your bras, while they can survive the dryer, you shouldn’t do it on purpose if you want them to last. The special materials in period underwear can become damaged quickly by repeated spins in the dryer.

Is period underwear machine washable?

Absolutely! As mentioned above, Proof underwear is totally machine washable. Just make sure you wash your panties in cold water on a delicate cycle.

What are other tips to take care of my period underwear?

If you want to sanitize your underwear, you can add a few drops of tea tree oil or vinegar to your washing machine. Using just a few drops of your favorite essential oil is a great way to make them smell nice and fresh without using a fabric softener, which can damage clothes over time. Many also have antibacterial qualities!

When you know how to look after your Proof period underwear properly, it can last you for years of use. If you treat them well (gently), they’ll do the same for you!
